Tame Impala – 8 April 2026 (Palau Sant Jordi – Barcelona)

10 April 20264 min read

When it was announced in late September that Tame Impala were finally going to play in Barcelona outside of a festival, I couldn’t deny that I was immediately excited. However, as I made my way up from Plaça Espanya, I could see that the small number of local fans in the nearly full Sant Jordi (between 15 and 20 per cent, at a generous estimate) would not ensure my success as a promoter.. Thankfully, a couple of hours later, Kevin Parker and his band proved me right with a remarkable concert. Despite a few ups and downs, the show always flowed smoothly, thanks to the band’s magnificent performance and their ability to move effortlessly between psychedelia and electronica. The spectacular light show was the icing on the cake.

The concert began with a perfectly timed crescendo, showcasing Parker’s musical evolution. He transitioned from the psychedelic melodies and choruses of his early days to heavier electronic beats at 135 BPM, sending the predominantly twenty-something crowd into a frenzy. The first 50 minutes of the concert were the best, thanks to tracks such as ‘Apocalypse Dreams‘, ‘The Moment‘, ‘Gossip‘ and ‘Elephant‘. However, the medley of the contrasting tracks ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards‘ and ‘Dracula‘ was undoubtedly the first major highlight of the night, which also saw Kevin Parker have his less-than-stellar moments. These included his baffling apathy towards the audience when he went down into the pit and the moment he was filmed going to the toilet.

The Australian artist took to a tiny secondary stage set up in the middle of the dance floor. Surrounded by cushions, a lamp and synthesisers, he put on a mini rave centred around his latest album, Deadbeat (2025). While he certainly showcased his incredible production skills, his choice of tracks seemed to completely disrupt the incredible atmosphere that had been built up until that point. Perhaps realising that the concert was heading in an undesirable direction, the band quickly played the ‘Let It Happen‘ card — with confetti and all — to win back the crowd and continue with a second half of the concert mainly focused on their early albums. This featured great tracks such as the now-distant ‘Alter Ego‘ and the majestic ‘Eventually‘, with its excessive reverb — probably the best track of the night.

There was still time to win over the audience with a selection of hits during the encores. These kicked off with the ever-popular ‘Old Ways‘ and ‘The Less I Know the Better‘, before the concert came to a close with ‘End of Summer‘ – a track that is more typical of Kalkbrenner or Moderat than what we have come to expect from Kevin Parker. This finale, which ended with one last dance track accompanied by lights and lasers of every colour flooding the Palau Sant Jordi, clearly signalled to the crowd the direction in which their music seems set to evolve in the coming years. It’s a case of love it or leave it.
