For those unfamiliar with them, Bass Drum of Death is the brainchild of John Barrett. Emerging from Oxford, Mississippi, the project draws on lo-fi garage rock, gritty garage punk and plenty of fuzz. They’re back on tour in Spain, revisiting their impressive back catalogue and showcasing tracks from their latest album, Six (2025).

The venue chosen for Monday 19 October’s gig could be none other than Sala Upload, located right in the heart of Barcelona’s Poble Espanyol. This was no coincidence; it marked the band’s triumphant return to the very same venue where they had previously caused quite a stir at the Barcelona Psych Fest in 2024. Clearly, Sala Upload and the band share a special bond.

To get things going, the evening kicked off with Javi Javier, who were tasked with heating up the atmosphere with their raw, carefree sound brimming with attitude. With their blend of energetic punk rock and catchy garage melodies, they fulfilled their mission of hooking the first brave souls, getting the crowd’s hearts racing, and leaving the dance floor in prime condition ahead of the main act.

At first, starting the week on a Monday night might seem like hard work, but the garage rock crowd responded without hesitation. From the very first chords of forgotten tracks such as ‘I Wanna Be Forgotten‘ and ‘Nerve Jamming‘, Bass Drum of Death unleashed their sharp riffs and corrosive fuzz, which reverberated straight through your chest… The crowd reacted quickly. What started as a few tentative head-bobs soon turned into a lively mosh pit in the middle of the dance floor. There were also moments of crowd-surfing, with people being sent flying through the air towards the stage. It’s pure, hard-earned energy with no frills, and the venue is buzzing just as much to the latest tracks as to the old favourites.

With bangers like “GB City”, “Way Out” and “Get Found”, Bass Drum of Death proved that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel when you’ve got attitude, distortion and songs that get straight to the point. They returned to the Upload, set the place alight once again, and transformed a dreary October Monday into a proper garage rock party. It’s the kind of gig that gets you fired up for the rest of the week.
