After years of hearing people say, ‘You’ve got to see them in a proper club<\/em>‘, we’ve finally been able to enjoy Amyl and the Sniffer<\/strong>s outside the festival circuit that has kept them so busy during their recent visits to Spain. After a brief introduction, which included the bizarre decision to play the chorus of Benny Benassi<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cSatisfaction<\/em>\u201d, the Australians kicked off in style with the powerful, fast-paced \u201cControl<\/em>\u201d. This made it clear that the night would be non-stop throughout the show, a fact confirmed by the succession of mosh pits and jumping during the second track on their setlist, \u201cDo It Do It<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

There was hardly any banter or unnecessary embellishment; Declan Mehrtens<\/strong>\u2019 guitar carried the band through a first set that was more garage<\/em>-oriented and featured \u201cSecurity<\/em>\u201d, \u201cCapital<\/em>\u201d, \u201cDoing in My Head<\/em>\u201d and \u201cGuided by Angels<\/em>\u201d. Amy Taylor<\/strong> herself filled every corner of the stage. The concert really hit its stride as soon as Lakota Vella<\/strong>‘s bass took centre stage. We were treated to 10 brilliant minutes with a medley of “Me and the Girls<\/em>“, “Pleasure Forever<\/em>“, “Chewing Gum<\/em>” and the electrifying “Tiny Bikini<\/em>“. This was probably the best-sounding track of the whole night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was only in the final moments of the concert that we could fully appreciate Bryce Wilson’<\/strong>s drumming, which had been rather in the background up to that point<\/strong>. ‘U Should Not Be Doing That<\/em>‘, ‘Jerkin<\/em>”, ‘Hertz<\/em>‘ and ‘Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled)<\/em>‘ seemed to be the grand finale to a short but intense concert. However, there was still time for non-stop moshing and sweat pouring down in torrents, as we were reminded of what Razzmatazz is like in August. The encores were reserved for ‘Got You<\/em>‘ and ‘GFY<\/em>‘.<\/p>\n

It was an intense hour and ten minutes, with a devoted audience and the Australians demonstrating why their live shows are not to be missed if they’re playing near your town. Returning to the opening paragraph, I must admit that, although their performance at Razzmatazz heightened the sense of immediacy and transience in their songs, their gig at the 2024 Primavera Sound festival<\/a> was almost as good in terms of quality and intensity.
