At the start of Barts Festival 2026<\/strong>, there was no easy nostalgia, but rather a precise and demanding reconstruction of a repertoire that still feels challenging, even forty years on. BEAT<\/strong> took to the stage at Poble Espanyol, turning the first night of the series into a celebration of cerebral progressive rock. Adrian Belew<\/strong>, Tony Levin<\/strong>, Steve Vai<\/strong> and Danny Carey<\/strong> performed as a quartet with surgical precision.<\/p>\n

Belew<\/strong> carried much of the narrative with his voice and guitar. Meanwhile, Levin<\/strong> provided the magical backdrop that underpinned it all. Steve Vai<\/strong> brought the pyrotechnic virtuosity that the British band\u2019s songs require, while Carey<\/strong> transformed the rhythmic complexity into something powerful and organic.<\/p>\n

This combination ensured that the concert never felt like a mere solo showcase, despite the obvious brilliance of the solos and more open sections. It was fascinating to see how pieces conceived in a different era regained their edge without losing their sense of strangeness. It was as if the band were performing them not from the distance of a tribute, but from direct experience of having lived that musical language. <\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All things considered, the project’s aim was not to recreate King Crimson<\/strong> as a museum piece, but rather to circulate music that demands attention, steady hands and a willingness to take risks. The audience, largely devoted to the progressive tradition, responded with the kind of contemplative fervour that arises only when a live performance compels you to listen properly<\/strong>, rather than just recognise the songs. Beat left Barcelona with an unusual feeling: not just that he had attended a concert that evoked an era, but that he had attended one that brought it to life with precision and audacity. The result was an evening that felt more like a reinterpretation than a tribute. <\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The first part of the concert drew on the 1980s trilogy, opening with the sharp and powerful renditions of \u201cNeurotica<\/em>\u201d and \u201cNeal and Jack and Me<\/em>\u201d. These two tracks made it clear from the very first minute that there was no room for superfluous embellishment here. ‘Heartbeat<\/em>‘ offered a melodic reprieve while maintaining the tension, while ‘Sartori in Tangier<\/em>‘ showcased the interplay of textures between Vai’s guitar, Belew’s phrasing, and the rhythmic work of Levin and Carey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The middle section grew in intensity with ‘Waiting Man<\/em>‘, ‘The Sheltering Sky<\/em>‘ and ‘Sleepless<\/em>‘ \u2013 three tracks that encapsulated the project’s essence: sophistication, precision, and an energy that avoids the obvious punch in favour of continuous shifts<\/strong>. The concert then really heated up with ‘Frame by Frame<\/em>‘, ‘Matte Kudasai<\/em>‘ and ‘Elephant Talk<\/em>‘, before building to an explosive finale with ‘Three of a Perfect Pair<\/em>‘, ‘Indiscipline<\/em>‘, ‘Red<\/em>‘ and ‘Thela Hun Ginjeet<\/em>‘. <\/p>\n
