Knowing that I wouldn\u2019t be able to get to the F\u00f2rum until after 10 pm, as soon as the line-up was announced, I put aside all the hype surrounding <strong>Geese<\/strong>, the prospect of a massive <strong>Agriculture<\/strong> gig and <strong>Mac DeMarco<\/strong>\u2019s return. Instead, I focused on sorting everything out so that I could make it in time for the <strong>Massive Attack<\/strong> concert&#8230; Despite ticking all the boxes on the plan and managing to park the car in a green zone just a few metres from the entrance, we couldn\u2019t get through the press access point when we reached it because the threat of rain had brought everything to a standstill! After waiting for almost 45 minutes for them to open and for the situation to improve, we sadly had to head back home along the ring road.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Friday 5 June<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Slowdive<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the disappointment of the previous day, our Primavera Sound 26 in Mordor got under way with a performance by <strong>Slowdive<\/strong>. The British band launched into a low-key set, gradually building up with their trademark distorted guitars. However, the sound faltered at times, which was disappointing. Taking a comprehensive journey through their discography, <strong>Neil Halstead<\/strong> took centre stage while <strong>Rachel Goswell<\/strong> took somewhat of a back seat. She was surrounded by an incredible crowd of fans who sang along to every single one of her songs and got carried away. Opening with her biggest hit, &#8216;<em>American Teenager<\/em>&#8216;, is a real statement of intent, and even more so when she dampens any euphoria with the subdued &#8216;<em>Nettles<\/em>&#8216;, <strong>where every line and every silence weighs on the audience like an emotional rock<\/strong>. Tracks such as \u201c<em>Ptolemaea<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>Gibson Girl<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Crush<\/em>\u201d then <strong>formed a brilliant middle section, creating a sense of unease and sadness<\/strong> that reached its climax with the medley of \u201c<em>Thoroughfare<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>A House in Nebraska<\/em>\u201d. However, it proved too small to contain the hype surrounding the American band <strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_1\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Water From Your Eyes<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Unfortunately, the concert did not live up to this expectation.<strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_2\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\"> Although decent, it was too lacklustre and lacked punch<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Just as I was thinking of heading back to see a packed stage, a large group of young people with pop star looks began leaving the busiest part of the festival after <strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong ate-chip ate-chip--compact\" data-segment=\"gid_1\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Addison Rae<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s performance. I can\u2019t deny that I was incredibly grateful for the extra space they left at the front of the stage. This allowed me to watch the concert by <strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_2\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Robert Smith<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s band in a way that I\u2019ve rarely seen a headline act perform on a main stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the first notes of &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em\" data-segment=\"gid_0\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Alone<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216;, it was clear that<strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_1\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\"> the Blackpool-born singer was in excellent voice<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 a description that could also be applied to the band, which was joined by <strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong ate-chip ate-chip--compact\" data-segment=\"gid_2\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Simon Gallup<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s son, <strong><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_3\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Eden<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, on guitar and keyboards.. With a <span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--strong\" data-segment=\"gid_4\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">s<strong>etlist very similar to that played over the last decade<\/strong><\/span><\/span>, &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em ate-chip ate-chip--compact\" data-segment=\"gid_5\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Pictures of You<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216; was performed in the first third of the concert. Other hits performed included &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em\" data-segment=\"gid_6\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Lovesong<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216; and &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em ate-chip ate-chip--compact\" data-segment=\"gid_7\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">The Walk<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216;, as well as rarities such as &#8216;<em>2 Late<\/em>&#8216;, &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em ate-chip ate-chip--compact\" data-segment=\"gid_9\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">alt.end<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216; and a rendition of &#8216;<em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em\" data-segment=\"gid_10\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">Burn<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8216; that instantly transports us back to your teenage years and watching <em><span class=\"sc-jXbUNg jFdUzx AT-ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em  ate-chip ate-chip--compact ate-chip--marker ate-chip--em\" data-segment=\"gid_11\" data-type=\"g\"><span class=\"sc-imWYAI hXteRa\">The Crow<\/span><\/span><\/em> at the cinema.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;<em>A Forest<\/em>&#8216; and &#8216;<em>Endsong<\/em>&#8216; ramped up the tempo before the band launched into some unforgettable encores that left no one untouched. After the break, the band chose \u201c<em>Lullaby<\/em>\u201d to set the tone, before launching into \u201c<em>The Lovecats<\/em>\u201d a few minutes later.. To conclude, &#8220;<em>Friday I&#8217;m in Love<\/em>&#8220;, &#8220;<em>Close to Me<\/em>&#8220;, &#8220;<em>Why Can&#8217;t I Be You?<\/em>&#8221; and a charming, more relaxed version of &#8220;<em>Boys Don&#8217;t Cry<\/em>&#8221; \u2013 <strong>a remarkable display of her extensive collection, with exceptional musicality<\/strong>. Dancing and an overuse of 3D graphics on the main screen kept the predominantly twenty-something audience hooked on her performance<\/strong>. It was far more effective than any review could convey, and we&#8217;re sure to see her gracing one of the main stages in the coming years&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Minutes later, the complete opposite took over the lower stage of the festival in the form of a performance by <strong>Kylesa<\/strong>, an American band and pioneers of a genre that would become known as psychedelic sludge metal. From <strong>Roy Mayorga<\/strong>\u2019s drumming (formerly of <strong>Soulfly<\/strong>) to the <strong>heavy riffs based on drop tuning, they jolted us awake with an unstoppable wall of sound<\/strong>. Although I was expecting a post-punk party, <strong>I still couldn\u2019t have imagined the horde of British hooligans who took the stage by storm during the concert<\/strong>. With <strong>Sebastian Murphy<\/strong> in top form as frontman, evoking the attitude of the best punk band leaders of the 1970s (drunken antics included), Viagra Boys demonstrated their incredible talent, led above all by the formidable <strong>Oskar Carls<\/strong> on saxophone. At times, they were reminiscent of British acts such as <strong>Squid<\/strong> or <strong>Shame<\/strong>.
